“Landscape with a Fence” and “Landscape with a Clock”
Ülo Sooster began the works “Landscape with a Fence” and “Landscape with a Clock” in 1958.
His native island, a traditional Hiiumaa fence, a field, and beyond it - the sea dissolving into the sky, a low horizon. This is how it appeared in 1958. And this is how the first painting remained.
With the second work, however, Ülo Sooster continued to reflect. Date: 1958-1960; technique: collage. Against the background of the familiar landscape appear an antique grandfather clock standing “upside down” and an architectural façade from the Renaissance.
And we follow the artist’s train of thought as it reveals connections between images that only at first glance seem unrelated - across time, space, and cultural context.
