Ülo Sooster memorial in Kärdla

Sooster Foundation SA invites sculptors to share their vision for a new Ülo Sooster memorial in Kärdla, Hiiumaa. The monument will commemorate Ülo Sooster (1924–1970), one of the most significant Estonian artists of the 20th century, and will be installed on the square in front of the artist’s former school, which is now Kärdla Music School (Uus 4).

  • Format:one-stage, anonymous competition
  • Language: proposals must be submitted in Estonian
  • Submissions: each participant may submit up to two designs
  • Anonymity: a secretary appointed by the Municipality of Hiiumaa will register proposals and keep author data hidden from the jury

Important dates

  • RSVP (participation confirmation): 15 December 2025, 17:00 EET
  • Submission deadline: 16 March 2026, 17:00 EET
  • Winner announcement: by 15 April 2026
  • Monument inauguration: 17 October 2027

What to submit (summary)

  • A1 boards: site plan 1:100 + at least 3 visualizations (incl. pedestrian eye level)
  • Model: sculptural part 1:10 (and, if needed, landscape/architectural massing elements at a suitable scale) + 4 photos
  • Explanatory note (A4 + digital): concept & symbolism; materials/structure/finish; lighting; integration with public space; preliminary cost estimate; basic maintenance guidelines
  • Digital copies on a memory device

How we evaluate & awards

Entries are evaluated according to seven criteria (artistic quality; relevance to Sooster; site integration; public accessibility/usability; technical feasibility; cost realism; sustainability). Prizes: 1st place — award of the Work Contract • 2nd — €5,000 • 3rd — €3,000 (amounts include taxes).
