Veera Sooster, née Tatter, was born on Hiiumaa on these autumn days – September 25, 1901. Her great-grandfather came from the De la Gardie family, which entered history.

Veera could have defied fate and escaped from the Soviet Union. That’s what her brother and sister did after the arrest of Veera’s son, Yulo Sooster. They took the risk and managed to reach Sweden by boat. Veera and her daughter Meedi refused at the last moment: they could not leave Ülo behind.

Veera lived 62 years. War, worries, and hard work undermined her health. But she lived to see her son return, to meet his wife and her grandson Tenno. And Ülo painted her portraits…
