The exhibition “Other Art. Moscow 1956–76” was held at the Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow) in 1990–1991, and at the Russian Museum (Leningrad) in April–May 1991.
It is regarded that the exhibition and its two-volume catalogue initiated the systematization of the chronicle of unofficial art.
“The independence and self-sufficiency of art—as a vivid, integral form of life—were reasserted anew. Art once again became incomprehensible, yet full of meaning. It astonished. It invited irony and reflection. It became a means of attuning oneself to a certain, unknown yet real spirit of the times that arose beyond political prescriptions.
The very purpose of practicing art became a path toward inner independence.”
Vasily Rakitin, art historian
