The island\u2019s stunning nature remained a constant, even as people\u2019s lives were buffeted by political upheavals and world wars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1940, her nephew \u00dclo Sooster drew her portrait, soon after entering the Pallas art school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After his arrest in 1944, Marta made a principled choice: she fled to Sweden by boat, risking her life. That was her decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet she kept her bond with her nephew at all costs, sending him what was nearly impossible to buy in the USSR: felt-tip pens, rapidographs with sets of colored ink, and other art materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When first  parcel arrived, \u00dclo waltzed around the table and shouted, \u201cI have never seen anything so beautiful! People, people, look how many drawings I\u2019m going to make!\u201d And he drew, and drew, and drew\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marta outlived her nephew by more than thirty years.
